QUESTION 522
DATE OF PUBLICATION OF INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 28/10/2011
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER 33 OF 2011)
Mr A Watson (DA-Mpumalanga) to ask the Minister of Higher Education and
Training:
How many persons (a) have applied and (b) were successful in studying each
specific medical science category in (i) 2007, (ii) 2008, (iii) 2009, (iv)
2010 and (v) 2011?
CW625E
PS: The Members is referring to all fields of medical studies: Medical
doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists etc.
Certainly the Department should have a list of recognized fields?
REPLY:
a) Currently my Department does not have national information on the number
and type of applications received for studying each specific medical
science category as this information is within the domain of the
respective universities.
However, my Department is in the process of developing a National Central
Application Service as signalled in the White Paper 3 (1997) and
reaffirmed by the National Plan for Higher Education (NPHE, 2001). This
service is intended to facilitate access to higher education institutions
for applicants, to help institutions deal more effectively with the
application and admission processes, and to provide institutions, regions
and my Department with valuable planning information. In short, the
service is intended to facilitate better management of student enrolment
within higher education at a standardised cost.
b) Table 1 below provides information on the number of students who
successfully enrolled in respective fields of medical sciences studies.
Information is provided for 2007 up to 2010, which is the latest audited
student data available based on information contained in the Higher
Education Management Information System (HEMIS) database.
Table 1:
|Â |2007 |2008 |2009 |2010 |Increase |
| | | | | |2007-2010 |
|Doctors |8 028 |8 295 |8 275 |8 677 |8.1% |
|Nurses |4 966 |4 979 |5 810 |5 597 |12.7% |
|Physiotherapist|1 308 |1 281 |1 310 |1 333 |1.9% |

|Dieticians |570 |581 |683 |672 |17.9% |
|Occupational |1 090 |1 082 |1 116 |1 104 |1.3% |
|therapists | | | | | |
The following should be noted regarding enrolments in the medical fields
and the classification of professions and/or occupations for the period
reported for 2007 â 2009.
The information is based on the enrolments in specific educational and
study fields which leads to the professions/fields of medical studies
specified.
1. Information on medical doctors is based on enrolments in the MBChB
programme. Enrolments have increased by 8.1% from 8,028 in 2007 to
8,677 in 2010.
2. Enrolments in the nursing field increased by 12.7% over the three-
year period from 4,966 in 2007 to 5,597 in 2010.
3. The number of students enrolled in the field of physiotherapy
increased from 1,308 in 2007 to 1,333 in 2010.
4. Students enrolled in the field of dietetics have increased by 17.9%
from 570 in 2007 to 672 in 2010.
5. There has been an increase of 1.3% in number of students enrolled
in the field of occupational therapy which is an increase from
1,090 students enrolled in 2007 to 1,104 students in 2010.
Higher education institutions are required to submit information on student
and staff data which relates to fields of study and courses studied
annually. As institutions vary in their offerings, a standard way of
classifying subject matter is required and contained in the Classification
of Education Subject Matter (CESM) manuals. The first manual was published
in 1982, and data prior to 2009 is compiled according to the 1982 edition
of the CESM categories. This manual was revised in 2008 and has been
implemented by institutions from the 2010 HEMIS reporting year. Table 2
below indicates enrolments for 2010 in the respective medical fields as
classified according to the revised CESMs.
