Mr M J R de Villiers (DA-WC) to ask the Minister of Home Affairs:
(1) (a) How many Senior Management Services (SMS) posts are currently
filled by acting managers and (b) from what date;
2) whether any steps are being taken to address this problem; if not, why
not; if so, (a) what steps and (b) what are the further relevant
details?

2) Yes.
(2)(a) Priority positions for SMS members have been identified and the
process of recruitment has commenced in July 2009. Three positions
which were held by acting SMS members have been filled. The positions
which have been filled are DDG: Civic Services and DDG: Finance and
Supply Chain Management (Chief Financial Officer). The process of
appointing a DDG: Human Resources has been finalised and the preferred
candidate will commence duty on 1 December 2009.
(2)(b) The Department is in the process of recruiting a further 53 SMS
members. The table below provides a breakdown / the number of SMS
members to be recruited per Branch:
