(1) The Department is aware of the growing informal settlement in Alexandra Extension 7, Johannesburg, commonly known as the Jungle next to the Jukskei River. The mushrooming of shacks started over 20 years ago through backyard shacks throughout the area due to over population and migration from other areas. In order to stop the land invasions, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has been tasked to monitor and deal with those who occupy land illegally.

(3) The City was made aware that the people staying at the informal settlement purchased the said land illegally and are paying monthly rent. A site inspection was conducted and it was discovered that there are illegal structures. The matter has been forwarded to Johannesburg Property Company to investigate as they are responsible for the management of Council owned properties.
(4) The curbing of the illegal sale of land at the specified informal settlement is the responsibility of the Johannesburg Property Company, which responsible for the management of Council owned properties.
(5) In the City of Johannesburg, all informal settlements are provided with services except for Electricity which is programmed through the availability of budget, the current electrification plans include Setjwetla and Marlborough informal settlements.
