75. Mr HB Groenewald (DA-NW) to ask the Minister of Police:
(1) Whether he or his department is taking any steps to ensure the safety
of delegates and visitors visiting the North West for the 2010 Fifa
World Cup Soccer tournament; if not, why not; if so, what are the
relevant details;
(2) whether his department has any safety and security measures in place
for the province during the 2010 Fifa World Cup Soccer tournament; if
not, why not; if so, what measures?

REPLY:
1) The SAPS, Provincial office, North West has developed an operational
plan for Tourism Safety. This operational plan has identified four
operational focus areas, which are the following:
_ Visible Policing at the tourist attraction sites;
_ Securing of attraction sites before, during and after the World
Cup;
_ Addressing potential threats such as bomb threats and attacks
etc; and
_ Crowd Management.
A Provincial SAPS co-ordinator has been appointed, to manage
tourism safety in the Province, in co-operation with Tourism
authorities, at local and provincial level.
Tourism Safety Information forms part of the preparations to ensure
safety of visitors.
(2) A comprehensive safety and security plan for the Province, has been
developed by all participating stakeholders, led by the SAPS, as has
been done in all provinces in preparation for the World Cup. This plan
was done in terms of national commitments for securing the World Cup
and provides for protection of teams, matches and accommodation
venues, the policing of World Cup related events, Fan Parks and Public
Viewing Areas, route security, as well as the tourism safety ( based
on the particular needs of the Province. The Provincial Joint
Operational Committee (PROVJOC) will be activated at the Province,
during 2010 FIFA World Cup, to manage all security aspects including
tourist related incidents. The PROVJOC will include representatives
from other departments, for example, the SANDF and Provincial
Department of Social Development, to ensure a co-ordinated approach.
