Mr D A Kganare (Cope) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) Whether his department has conducted any population-based surveys to
determine how HIV prevalence varies according to (a) gender, (b) level
of education and (c) location; if so, what were the findings; if not,
(2) whether he intends conducting such surveys, similarly to 30 other
countries in sub-Saharan Africa; if not, why not; if so, (a) when and
(b) what are the relevant details?

REPLY:
1) No, the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) has conducted three
population based surveys for surveillance of the HIV epidemic in South
Africa. This was in 2002, 2005 and 2008. These surveys are known as
the South African Behavioural, Serostatus Survey and Mass Media Impact
Survey (SABSSM).
