2604. Mrs A T Lovemore (DA) to ask the Minister of Police:
(1) (a) How many persons were arrested during the outbreak of xenophobic
violence in 2008, (b) what was the charge against each arrestee
charged and (c) how many of the arrestees were (i) prosecuted and (ii)
found guilty in respect of the charges laid against them;
(2) whether any arrestees were released without having been prosecuted;
if so, (a) how many and (b) why;
(3) (a) how many persons were arrested during the outbreak of xenophobic
violence in 2011, (b) what was each of the arrestees charged with and
(c) how many of the arrestees were (i) prosecuted and (ii) found
guilty in respect of the charges laid against them;
(4) whether any arrestees were released without having been prosecuted;
if so, (a) how many and (b) why?

REPLY:
1) â (4) The South African Police Service does not keep separate records
of arrests and prosecutions stemming from so-called âxenophobic attacksâ
as all crimes are regarded, recorded and investigated only as crime.
