Mr M S F de Freitas (DA) asked the Minister of Transport:
(1) Whether his department maintains statistics of road accidents and
deaths relating to drunk driving; if not, why not; if so, what are the
statistics for each province (a) in the (i) 2005-06, (ii) 2006-07,
(iii) 2007-08, (iv) 2008-09 and (v) 2009-10 financial years and (b)
during the period 1 April 2010 up to the latest specified date for
which information is available;
(2) (a) what initiatives and measures does his department implement on
the (i) national and (ii) provincial level to prevent accidents caused
by drunken drivers and (b) how is the success of the specified
initiatives measured;
(3) what successes in prevention have been achieved in each province (a)
in the (i) 2005-06, (ii) 2006-07, (iii) 2007-08, (iv) 2008-09 and (v)
2009-10 financial years and (b) during the period 1 April 2010 up to
the latest specified date for which information is available?

The Minister of Transport:
(1) Yes, the Department of Transportâs public entity, the Road Traffic
management Corporation (RTMC) maintains the statistics of road
accidents and deaths relating to drunk driving.
