QUESTION 1277 15 SEPTEMBER 2009
WRITTEN REPLY
1277. Mr. P D DEXTER (COPE) to ask the Minister of Public Works:
Since the start of the recession, how many jobs have been created in terms
of the Expanded Public Works Programme? NW1624E
REPLY
The South African economy went into recession for the first time since
1992, following a sharp slowdown in the manufacturing and mining sectors in
May 2009.
Africa's biggest economy contracted at an annualised rate of 6.4% between
January and March, compared with the same period a year earlier.
In the 1st quarter of reporting, The Expanded Public Works Programme has
created over 83 000 work opportunities across its 4 sectors and all
provinces.
