Ms A M Dreyer (DA) asked the Minister of Public Works:
(1) Whether the Marshall Street Police Barracks in Johannesburg, at site
65 on Anderson Street, has provisional heritage protection as
stipulated in the National Heritage Resources Act, Act 25 of 1999; if
not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
(2) what steps have been taken to ensure that the future redevelopment of
this site complies with the Act;
(3) whether a heritage assessment was conducted by recognised heritage
architects for this site; if not, why not; if so, what are the
relevant details;
(4) why is the site described as 65 Anderson Street when its real name is
Marshall Street Police Barracks? NW236E
Reply:
The Minister of Public Works
1) I am supposing that the Honourable Member intended to refer to site 85
Anderson Street, which is the correct reference in this case. If so,
the answer is yes, site 85 Anderson Street enjoys protection under the
National Heritage Resources Act, 1999 [Act No. 25 of 1999].
2) Specifications for future work to be done on this site all include
heritage compliance.
3) Future work on this site will include heritage assessments, and as per
the established practice such work will be done by qualified
specialists.
4) The real description of this site is Erf 1107 Marshalltown,
Johannesburg and the street address is 85 Anderson Street,
Marshalltown, Johannesburg. It is also known as Marshall Street Police
Barracks based on its previous use as such.
