MR M J R De Villiers (DA â WC) to ask the Minister of Sport and Recreation:
1) Whether any irregularities have been identified in his Department. If
so; what are the relevant details?
2) Whether any action is being taken to address these irregularities? If

REPLY:
1. Yes, nine (9) cases of irregular expenditure were reported during the
2008 / 2009 financial year.
2. ACTION TAKEN:
CLIENT SUPPORT SECTION:
⢠Employee (Ben Ledimo) - Charged with Fraud; Forgery; Dishonesty -
Found Guilty and dismissed on 29 September 2008.
⢠Employee (Solomon Mahlangu) - Charged with 5 charges of Gross
Dishonesty. Pleaded guilty on all charges. Found guilty and
Dismissed on the 24th October 2008.
CLIENT SUPPORT SECTION:
⢠Fraud and Misrepresentation Richards Bay - Internal Investigation
finalized two officials charged. Fraud and Dishonesty; Appearing on
the 14th and 15th December 2009.
COMMUNICATION & MARKETING SECTION:
⢠Beijing Olympics: Internal Investigation Finalized. Legal
proceedings have been initiated against the former Director â
General.
ZONE VI GAMES SPECIAL UNIT:
⢠Riviera on Vaal: Investigation finalised. The Director for
International Relations should be charged for Dereliction of duty
and Gross Negligence. Matter transferred to the Department of
Correctional Services (Employee transferred).
⢠Donât forget George tender (Opening and closing ceremonies for
Zone VI) - Investigation in progress.
MASS PARTICIPATION SECTION:
⢠Summer Games (Irregular payment of service provider for
services not rendered): Investigation Finalised. Acting-Chief
Director to answer for negligence in approving payment of
Service provider for services not rendered. Disciplinary action
instituted not yet finalised.
⢠Magic Travel (Irregular payment for accommodation for a
cancelled meeting) - Internal Investigation in progress.
CORPORATE SERVICES SECTION:
⢠Payment of 8% Performance Bonuses FOR 2005 / 2006 across the
board. Action was taken against CFO and Acting Director Human
Resources. They were both issued with written warning by
Director-General. Steps have been taken to recover payment from
affected officials.
