QUESTION: NO 603 (Internal Question Paper No 38 â 2011)
Mr S H Plaatjie (COPE-NW) to ask the Minister of Sport and Recreation:
Whether Boxing South Africa has put any measures in place to address the
use of steroids by boxers; if not, what is the position in this regard; if
so, what are the relevant details?
REPLY
Yes, Boxing South Africa has firstly prioritised the training of Boxers so
that they understand that the use of all types of drugs which are
âsupposedly performance enhancersâ is wrong. A training and awareness
programme is currently underway which takes a form of provincial
training workshops for boxers, facilitated by SAIDS in partnership with
BSA. This training programmeâs last provincial workshops were held in
the Eastern Cape and KZN in September/October 2011.
Secondly, SAIDS is informed five working days before every tournament by
BSA to enable them to conduct tests on boxers for every tournament,
Thirdly, BSAâ new board is in a process of appointing a medical committee
which comprises five medical doctors per province, whose task, inter
alia, will include supervision of all pre-fight and post-fight medical
reports that will also enable BSA to pick up any of these illegal uses
of banned substances.
Lastly, BSA has also attended SAIDSâ recent Conference held on the
27/10/2011 in Cape Town so as to be updated on the current developments
in the Anti-Doping Campaign.
