REPLY:
The Minister of Transport:
1) The scholar transport subsidy is currently provided through the
Department of Educationâs budget. The contracting of scholar
transport is typically handled by Provincial Departments of Education,
although in some cases it is the Provincial Departments of Transport,
working with its Provincial Education Departments that contracts and
regulates these services.
2) The Department of Transport is in the process of consulting on the
future of scholar transport with the Department of Basic Education.
This is part of a process of developing a unified national scholar
transport policy that integrates our approach to scholar transport
more effectively with our overall approach to transforming public
transport. We plan to have the policy approved before December 2010.
