The Minister of Transport:
(1) Yes, the taxi industry has a role to play with regard to public
transport in the country. According to the Household Travel Survey of
2003, taxis transport close to 65% of the commuting public daily. The
Department of Transport took a decision in our Transport Lekgotla
earlier this year that all new subsidised public transport, tendered
or negotiated, should integrate the minibus taxi operations. The Rea
Vaya BRT in Johannesburg has agreed to a two-third majority ownership
by taxi operators in the operating company of the system.
(2) Cabinet decided in the meeting of 10 August 2011 to exempt commuter
taxis (class A), as well as commuter busses (class B), from paying
toll tariffs within the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme.
