13. Mr O de Beer (COPE-WC) to ask the Minister of Water and Environmental
Affairs:
Whether her department has undertaken detailed surveys to establish the
number of fish processing plants that were closed down along the West
Coast; if not, why not; if so (a) what were the reasons for the closure
of the fish processing plants, (b) how many persons had consequently
lost their jobs as a result of that and (c) what are the further
relevant details?

13. THE MINISTER OF WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS ANSWERS:
No. The Department is only aware of two Fish Processing Establishments
that closed down along the West Coast.
a) The reasons are linked to operational requirements of the Fish
Processing Establishments as well as the decline and shift of fish
resources from the West Coast to the South and East Coast.
b) As no detailed study has yet been done, it is not clear at this
stage.
c) None.
