The enrolment target of the institution is 56 000 students with 436 academic programmes, 1000 permanent academic posts and R700 million academic budget. . The three former institutions differed widely in their philosophy and approach to academic development. The pre-merger period was characterised by fragmentation, and a lack of common vision and framework for academic development. . The undergraduate success rate increased with 7.32% since 2003 and surpassed the department's target set for TUT by 2010 with 2% in 2008. Its undergraduate headcount enrolment increased with 4647 since 2003.
