The MINISTER FOR WOMEN, CHILDREN AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: Hon Deputy Speaker, hon members, South Africa joins the rest of the world in observing the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children campaign for 2011. This initiative has been endorsed by the United Nations, and is taking place annually from 25 November, which is the international day of no violence against women, to 10 December, observed as International Human Rights Day. South Africa has been running this campaign since 1999; therefore this year marks the 12th anniversary of the campaign in the country. While it started with a focus on gender-based violence, the 16 days campaign has evolved to include issues relating to violence against women and against children as well.
