3.2 Supplier Development and Localisation Eskom accounts for approximately 3% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For the year under review Eskom spent R72.1 billion on Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) companies. This represents 73.2% of the total spend compared to R41.9 billion or 52.3% in 2010/11. The company achieved 77.2% local content in the new build contracts placed for the 2011/12 financial year. Since inception of the respective new build projects, the total local content committed by Eskom supplier network amounted to R75.2 billion or 62.6% of the total contract values awarded in the new build projects.
