QUESTION FOR WRITTEN REPLY
2349. Mr P J Groenewald (FF Plus) to ask the Minister of Defence and
Military Veterans:
(1) Whether, with reference to her reply to question 1637 on 19 August
2013, any (a) prosecutions have been instituted and (b) disciplinary
steps have been taken; if not, why not, in each case; if so, (i) what
steps and (ii) against how many persons in each case were these steps
taken;
(2) whether she will make a statement on the matter?

REPLY
Weapons
2009 (aa).
i) No prosecutions have been instituted on the two (2) weapons /
firearms that were lost in 2009 as the Military Police are still
busy with investigations. The SA Army is in the process of
obtaining copies of Boards of Inquiry relating to the weapons
that were lost in 2009 that were destroyed in a fire at the
Armyâs Headquarters (Bester building). Information in the
foregoing regard will be provided as soon as the process is
finalized.
i) No disciplinary steps have been taken because the loss is still
under investigation by the Military Police.
2010 (bb).
i) No prosecutions have been instituted on the (3) weapons /
firearms that were stolen in 2010. Two (2) weapons / firearms
have been found and the case is still with the South African
Police Services (SAPS).
ii) Yes, disciplinary action was taken. Two members who were on
duty when one (1) weapon / firearm were stolen from the guard
room were charge and sentenced.
2011 (cc).
(i) No prosecutions have been instituted for the one (1) weapon /
firearm that was lost as the SAPS is still busy with
investigations.
(ii) No disciplinary actions were taken against the two members who
were responsible for the safekeeping of the weapon yet. The case
has been referred to the Military Courts for prosecution.
2012 (dd).
(i) No prosecutions have been instituted yet for four (4) of the six
(6) weapons / firearms that were lost during 2012.
(ii) No disciplinary actions have been taken yet against one member
who is a suspect in the loss of these four (4) weapons /
firearms. The case is still under investigation by the SAPS.
(i) No prosecutions will be instituted pertaining to two (2) of the
six (6) weapons / firearm that were damaged in an aircraft
accident that took place in the Drakensberg mountains during
December 2012.
(ii) No disciplinary action will be taken pertaining the damaged
weapons / firearms.
2013. No weapons have been lost.
(b). Ammunition. No ammunition was reported stolen / lost over the stated
period.
