QUESTION 1515/2013
FOR WRITTEN REPLY
Date of publication on internal question paper: 14 June 2013
Internal question paper no: 21
1515. Mrs P C Duncan (DA) to ask the Minister of Social Development:
What restrictions in terms of social grant deductions can her department
place on social grant money, once it has been paid into the beneficiaryâs
bank account?
NW1861E
Reply:
Social grant deductions permissible are those defined in terms of section
26 A, of the Social Assistance regulations, which should not exceed 10 % of
the value of the grant amount. Thatâs why on the 1st of June SASSA decided
that only 10% deductions will be allowed. Others are done between the
beneficiary and the borrower. One of the reasons we decided to re-register
the grant recipients was to deal with this because some of the provinces
had signed agreements on deductions.
