Mr M H Hoosen (ID) to ask the Minister of Health:
(1) What (a) is the average cost for each termination of pregnancy in
state hospitals and (b) is the total number of terminations of
pregnancy procedures which were conducted in state health institutions
for the past three years;
(2) whether he has found that the increase in the number of terminations
of pregnancy is an indication of young women using this as a means of
contraception; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so,
what plans are in place to (a) curb this use of terminations and (b)
educate young women in this regard?

REPLY:
1) (a) Termination of pregnancy is provided free of charge in
designated state facilities and can only be costed by
quantifying the consumables used during the procedure. The
health care provider costs/staff time to the facility, is not
quantified.

(b) The total number of terminations conducted in the last three
years (2008-2010) is 139Â 647 with 63Â 660 performed in 2008; a
total of 45Â 745 in 2009 and 30Â 242 in 2010.
