QUESTION 2135
DATE OF PUBLICATION OF INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER: 06/11/09
(INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 27-2009)
De JC Kloppers â Lourens (DA) to ask the Minister of Higher Education and
Training:
What is the reason for the estimated 33,000 tradesmen that received
training in 1986 as compared to the currently estimated 1000?
NW2814E
REPLY:
The estimated figure of 1000 tradesmen seems to be incorrect because a
total of 44,780 learners/apprentices were registered in trade related
learnerships and apprenticeships during the last three years to 31st March
2009 of which the majority is still receiving training based on the period
of apprenticeship as prescribed in the relevant Conditions of
Apprenticeship (3-5 years).
In terms of the information as contained in the 1986 Annual Report of the
Department of Labour a total number 29,826 apprentices received training
during the said period.
