INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 27 OF 2009
Dr C P Mulder (FF Plus) to ask the Minister of Home Affairs:â
(1) How many Zimbabwean citizens (a) made use of the 90-day visas to
enter South Africa since the visas were introduced and (b) left the
country (i) before and (ii) after their 90-day visas had expired;
(2) whether the Zimbabweans who were still in South Africa after the
expiration of their 90-day visas were repatriated; if so, (a) how many
were repatriated and (b) what was the total cost of the repatriation;
3) (a) how many Zimbabweans who entered the country with 90-day visas (i)
worked, (ii) applied for work and (iii) found work in South Africa in
this period and (b) in which sectors in each case?

REPLY
(1)(a) A total of 964 011 Zimbabwean nationals entered the Republic of
South Africa [from 6 May 2009 (when the 90 day visa exemption
was introduced) until 8 November 2009].
(1)(b) A total of 792 690 Zimbabwean nationals departed from the
Republic of South Africa (from 6 May 2009 until 8 November
2009).
(1)(b)(i) A total of 754 372 Zimbabwean nationals departed before or
on the expiry date of their visitorâs permits.
(1)(b)(ii) A total of 38 318 Zimbabwean nationals departed after the
expiry of their visitorâs permits.
(2)(a) & (b) No. The 38 318 Zimbabwean nationals who overstayed
incurred fines in terms of section 50(1) of the Immigration Act,
2003 (Act No 13 of 2003).
