This year is the 20th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day and more than 19 years of independent press media freedom in South Africa. An opportunity exists for all of us South Africans to reflect on the key milestone achieved in the quest to attain media freedom and celebrate the fundamental principle of media freedom enshrined in our Constitution. We must also defend and protect media freedom and pay tribute to media activists andjournalists who lost their lives in the line of duty. All South Africans have reason to join the world in remembering and celebrating World Press Freedom Day.
