In recognition of the ANC centenary, the elderly of Gauteng, in particular those who are also celebrating their centenary birthdays this year, were recently honoured by the Mayor of Tswane during a moving and touching ceremony.
It was a special day for the centenarians as they were pampered by the mayor in a special way for their one hundred years on earth. The City of Pretoria was filled with excitement and joy as elderly people from Tshwane were treated to cake and other refreshments. Old men and women who have seen most of what life has to offer gathered in the hall, where they experienced a once-off date with the lifetime opportunity to be celebrated for being old.
Linah Mohlala, who is 100 years old, said that the youth of today are careless about the elderly, but she was excited to be celebrating her centenary. Another couple that has been married for about 75 years, Ester and Wilson Mabusela, shared special memories with their peers about ageing.
The ANC encourages everyone to take care of our elderly as their sacrifices and wisdom in helping us to build a better life for all must be appreciated and celebrated. We commend the mayor for honouring the frail and elderly. We also support him in his call for people to take care of them because they still have a vital role to play in society. I thank you. [Applause.]
