House Chair, I move without notice:
That the House -
1) notes that World Diabetes Day takes place on 14 November every year and the date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin;
2) further notes that diabetes is a global epidemic with debilitating and life-threatening complications, and there are more than 250 million people with diabetes worldwide;
3) acknowledges that within 20 years, this number is expected to grow to 380 million;
4) further acknowledges that the World Diabetes Day 2012 campaign marks the fourth year of the five-year focus on diabetes education and prevention, and the slogan chosen for this year's campaign is Diabetes - Protect Our Future; and
5) encourages all citizens to build awareness amongst members of their families and communities of the warning signs and risk factors of diabetes and that in many cases type 2 diabetes can be prevented through healthy eating and physical activity.
Agreed to.
