Infrastructure: Chile has an effective transport and communication services and a world-class sea-port. Talented and well qualified work-force: The country is characterized by good development indicators, which include the literacy rate of 96 percent, life expectancy of 77.5 years and infant mortality rate of 7.8 per 1000 births. The workforce in Chile comprises 7 million people. Mining employs about 110 000 workers and has suffered only 1.1 percent labour incidents. The minimum wage for the industry is US$350 and most workers are earning above the set rate. Women participation in the mining industry is estimated at 7 percent. The Council is working with universities and technical colleges to address the mining related skills shortages.
