In 2007 and 2008, South Africa experienced a near complete grid shutdown which grounded and halted activities in mines, smelters and other big businesses for days at a time. This is costing the South African economy billions of rand and thousands of jobs. While demand is constantly growing, most of the country's power infrastructure is ageing and has been operated at a higher intensity than planned, and we are not having correct maintenance downtime. The risk of unplanned outages thus continues to increase. We need to get Medupi up and running as soon as possible to mitigate the risk of another grid-wide shutdown and associated economic damages. We welcome Minister Gigaba's announcement that the station will be up and running by 2013. However, we need to know when in 2013. We are cutting it finer than I think any of us would care to imagine.
