2. The project was part of the government's programme to improve the general, but especially, hygienic and sanitary living conditions in the inner city of Havana. The aim was to find innovative solutions within small and compact urban areas. The houses were inherited from the pre-revolutionary government and had to be extended to appropriate sizes of 25 square metres incorporating bathrooms, two bedrooms and a kitchen. The houses are state-owned and its inhabitants sign leases and pay for electricity and water services.
