In trying to explain reasons for the low rating of the station on the performance chart and for problems with the detection of property and contact crimes, the detectives described that the Local Criminal Record Centre were not picking up fingerprints at the crime scenes because the criminals were all wearing gloves or putting glue on their fingertips. In addition, they stated that the Crime Scene Investigators who were based at Cluster rather than station level were taking too long to get to the crime scenes and there was thus a very real risk of contamination of crime scenes. This problem was exacerbated when touch DNA evidence collection was required as then people needed to come from Pretoria to collect this evidence. They were happy with the work done by the Visible Policing components in securing the scene.
