The Committee visited the city of Caracas in Venezuela and had meetings with state-owned enterprises, the Portfolio Committee on Administration and Services, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land. The entities with which the Committee interacted included Proforca (forestry), IFE (rail institute), Sidor (iron and stainless steel), Corpoelec (electricity), Minerven (Mining), Conviasa (Airline), Cantv (Telecommunication), and the Public Banking Corporation. The focus of the interaction with the SOEs related to their mandates, developmental projects and governance structures. The Committee also visited one of the developmental projects of PDVSA (a state-owned oil company), which was a multi- purpose centre that housed facilities for health, recreation, education and training, including a centre for "refugees". In Brazil the Committee visited the city Sao Paulo and met with Sabesb, a state-owned water management company. It also met with PriceWaterhouseCoopers who made a presentation to the Committee on SOEs in Brazil, examples of successes and failures and the underlying principles of successful SOEs.
