Before the new mining law was introduced in 1999, there were a number of mining companies all over Venezuela. Their activities were of no benefit to the people of Venezuela according to the ruling socialist party and some of the mines remained idle and unutilised. The new mining law enabled the Venezuelan government to take over the mining industry by merging various mining companies that were operating in Venezuela. They have established joined ventures with countries such as Cuba and Equador. The company is involved in deep mining of up to 3 000 metres. It involves closely various communal councils, where Minerven contribibutes up to 5% to social funds and a certain percentage of profits in housing, clinics and other services for communal councils, especially in rural areas.
