All inspectors were conducting normal inspections. No specialised skills available. The labour centre was receiving complaints about Employment Equity Act compliance. When conducting inspections, it was discovered that some employers were not complying with labour laws. During an inspection, for example, most of the foreign workers did not have work permits. Inspections were both announced and unannounced. In remote areas, farm inspections would be announced for safety purposes. Inspections at workplaces in town were also announced. There was lack of co-operation by the employers in terms of complying with labour laws. Other complainants died during the processing of their complaints. Sometimes employers were reported to have absconded from accountability. The labour centre indicated that it would be of great importance if upcoming amendments to labour legislation could address these challenges.
