Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that on 9 August 2011 South Africa marked the 55th anniversary of the women's march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to demand equality, dignity and their rightful place in South African society;
2) further notes that the 1956 march by 20 000 women from all walks of life was a turning point in the active role South African women played in the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa;
3) also notes that Women's Day celebrations were held at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Women's Day, 9 August, to pay tribute to all women of our country for their selfless contribution to building a society based on these principles and that the event was addressed by President Jacob Zuma, where he paid special attention to the achievements of our society in empowering and affirming women, and also highlighted what we further need to do to ensure economic freedom for women by outlining steps that our government is taking to achieve this objective; and
4) takes this opportunity to congratulate the Ministry of Women, Children and People with Disabilities for hosting a very successful Women's Day to highlight and mainstream issues affecting South African women.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
