Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes the complaint levelled against the Edenvale Panthers Rugby Club that they allegedly assaulted the Soweto Rugby Club SRC players in the dying minutes of the game on Saturday during a provincial league match managed by the Gauteng Golden Lions Rugby Union;
2) also notes that the players were allegedly called "kaffirs" and they left Edenvale with black eyes, cuts and bruises after the attack;
3) further notes that these allegations have been reported to the Lions Union, South African Rugby, the Gauteng MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation, Lebogang Maile and Sport and Recreation Minister, Fikile Mbalula;
4) urges that this matter be thoroughly investigated and that steps be taken, in the event that they are to be found true, to eradicate our rugby in particular and sport in general of all forms of violence and racial abuse; and
5) calls on the Minister to appoint a commission of inquiry into violence in our sport to ensure that sport plays an important part in our efforts in nation-building.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
