Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes the initiative of a resident of Du Noon informal settlement, Mr Diya Mondreki, who after having been on the housing waiting list for many years and with no hope of receiving a formal house in the foreseeable future, took the initiative of replacing his shack with a brick and mortar structure from discarded bricks in order to provide a better home for his family;
2) further notes that in view of the current economic restraints linked with unemployment, systemic poverty and the housing backlogs, the DA-controlled City of Cape Town, instead of supporting such initiatives and assisting people and communities who are in desperate need of improving their living conditions and who are in a position to do so, has now deemed it fit rather to serve Mr Mondreki with a notice informing him that he is in contravention of the national building regulations and that he must demolish the house within seven days, failing which the City will hire a contractor to take the house down;
3) takes this opportunity to commend Mr Mondreki on his initiative; and 4 calls on the City of Cape Town to withdraw its notice that the house be demolished and meet with Mr Mondreki and rather endeavour to solve the matter in the best interests of his family and all concerned.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
