Deputy Chairperson, I move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes that the Musina Local Municipality in Limpopo announced on Thursday, 9 June, that it was rolling out free basic services to 2 274 families and that the families identified are those who live in households with a combined monthly income of less than R2 400 and that each family will receive 54,2 units of free electricity, 6 000 litres of free clean water and a discount on refuse removal and sewage;
2) further notes that this important initiative emanates from the municipality's local economic development strategy, which, in partnership with local business, strives to create employment, seeks to eradicate dependency on government, will result in fewer indigents receiving the grants and will create employment for all;
3) further notes that the Musina Local Municipality also initiated a number of jobs intended to create general employment for 50 community members who were previously unemployed and these jobs include sweeping streets, debushing public areas and general cleaning, in both towns and townships; and
4) takes this opportunity to welcome this bold initiative and the initiatives of this municipality to heed the President's call to join efforts and find solutions to the unemployment challenge facing our country and to contribute towards the objective of a better life for all.
