Hon Chairperson, I hereby move without notice:
That the Council -
1) notes and welcomes the recent World Health Organisation's Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, which shows that alcohol is the major contributor to death and social ills across the world, as a major contributor to raising global awareness about the adverse effects of alcohol abuse on individuals and communities;
2) further notes that the report shows that approximately 2,5 million people die each year from alcohol-related causes and that women and children bare the brunt of the harmful and deadly effects of alcohol abuse;
3) acknowledges that alcohol leads to blatant violence, physical and emotional abuse against women and children and is one of the major causes of risky behaviour and other social ills such as crime and rape, and is a serious cause of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and Aids; and
4) takes this opportunity to welcome the South African government's move to strengthen controls to limit alcohol abuse and regulate alcohol sale and distribution.
Motion agreed to in accordance with section 65 of the Constitution.
