The sector, however, continues to wrestle with entrenched inequalities. More than 50% of commercial farmers are small businesses with an annual turnover of less than R300 000 per annum. However, since the concept of traceability of products has become more stringent in many international markets, commercial farmers should be assisted to adhere to strict regulations regarding the breeding and certifying of parentage. The only way that the production potential on some commercial livestock farms can be improved is to make use of superior genetic material.
