The final draft policy to accommodate the broad-based empowerment interests of small-scale fishers has been workshopped with over 100 communities along the coast, and we have been told it has been placed on the agenda of the National Economic Development and Labour Council, Nedlac. The suspension of the commercial abalone fishery has been successfully lifted, with the near-instant reactivation of around 1 000 sustainable employment opportunities. One thousand five hundred coastal community fishers have been awarded interim relief during the period which it takes to finalise policy to accommodate the interests of small-scale fishers. The performance review of rights holders has been completed and we await the final report with keen interest.
