The Committee commended Eskom on a well-presented report and congratulated Mr Dames, who was attending the Committee meeting for the first time in his new capacity as Eskom's CEO. The Committee noted that the issue around coal and coal technologies was of great concern as mining houses have indicated that superior coal was being exported, and only inferior quality coal was used by Eskom. The Committee was also concerned that bonuses and perks were received by Eskom's top management, despite the utility's economic challenges, and this in contrast with the threat of strikes and anger on the ground surrounding the huge wage gap. The Committee wanted to know what Eskom was doing to reduce this gap and to address the anger of the workers.
