The Charter was officially adopted on 26 June 1955, at the Congress of the People in Kliptown. The Charter is most notable for its demand for and commitment to a nonracial South Africa. But of significance for this debate is the call for human rights contained in the Charter. Although a section of the Charter refers to human rights and equality, the truth is that almost all that is contained in the Freedom Charter is now considered basic human rights within the Bill of Rights, as contained in the Constitution.
