Chair, we will have to get back to the hon member with regard to the specific figures. What I can say is that the redemarcation exercise is precisely meant to streamline the boundaries of our courts with those of the municipalities, and at the same time to harmonise and synergise the manner in which the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the SA Police Service and the Department of Correctional Services demarcate their areas of work.
At the moment the problem that we face in many of those areas is that the court has one way of determining its boundaries and jurisdiction, the prosecuting authority has another way and the police have yet another. So, when they have to work together at ground level, it becomes quite difficult because the centres of co-ordination and command for those different structures might be located in different areas. That is what we hope to achieve through this redemarcation exercise, in addition to the great contribution it will make to widening access to justice.
Measures put in place to improve working conditions of soldiers and measures taken to involve Defence Force unions
17. Mr B Nesi (ANC) asked the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans:
(1) What measures has her department put in place to (a) improve working conditions of soldiers and (b) ease the tensions between her department and the Defence Force unions;
(2) whether such measures involve direct engagement with the Defence Force unions; if not, why not; if so, what structures and mechanisms are used to improve the level of interaction and engagement on issues pertaining to the Defence Force?
