The information provided was vague in that kilometres travelled did not correlate with the distance recorded in the register. This was qualified by the information provided indicating that the furthest point from the police station was 25 kilometres but the register reflected 177 kilometres travelled. It was discovered that detectives signed after-hours trip authorisations to take vehicles home with them. That system was not properly managed and was open to misuse and abuse. From the Committee's point of view, this fact supported an allegation from the community that police vehicles were being used for purposes not related to work. It was further discovered that a vehicle was allocated to staff for administration duties and that some of the other duties recorded on the register were ambiguous.
