It was discovered that firearms were kept in the safe with other items including the belongings of the detainees. The Firearms Register was not completed properly in that a firearm was taken out and no one signed for it. The Committee was of the view that this compromised security of the firearms and further contravened the Firearms Control Act. Firearms handed in during the amnesty process were found to be still in existence notwithstanding a national call for them, to be destroyed by April 2010. The Committee proposed that the Provincial Commissioner of Police should address this matter urgently.
