With regard to tariff amendments, ITAC will continue to investigate selective tariff increases and decreases. According to the Chief Commissioner of ITAC, the objective of ITAC is to promote domestic production; the retention and creation of jobs; and the international competitiveness of South Africa. ITAC acknowledged that the tariff setting for the agricultural sector is more complex given the global distortions, since there is a great need for the right balance between profitability of producers on the one hand and consumer prices on the other. The Chief Commissioner of ITAC provided a list of sectors and industries which was investigated by ITAC. These include, inter alia: aluminum, textiles, plastic products, and automotive components.
