Khula had a two-fold focus over the next three years. Its main thrust was to introduce Khula Direct as a retail operation offering finance directly to SMEs who were otherwise unable to attract funding. This was meant to address limitations of the wholesale model, which channel funds through other credit providers. The off-take by these partners had declined dramatically in recent years. Its other focus was to re-engineer the wholesale model, to enable it to support the retail model, and to grow Khula's outreach and impact.
