If no cell phone number is provided, the complainant receives a document (SAPS 429) with the case number and contact details of the Unit that will be investigating the case in order to make any enquiries about progress on the case. In rural areas the SAPS 429's are mostly utilized due to lack of proper infrastructure. The Department concedes that there are shortcomings when it comes to feedback to complainants with regards to court dates and the finalization of their cases. The Department is, however, in a process of improving the complainants' feedback system until their cases are finalized. Further measures are taken by General Investigations: Head Office to monitor the SMS system both electronically and manually on a monthly basis.
