. It was noted that the goal of a university of technology is to increase its enrolments and throughput rate in science, engineering and technology in response to the current skills demand in these sectors. . It was highlighted that the university is unable to admit learners to study engineering without physics as part of their course according to its policy. The department was informed of this situation but delayed to communicate it to the 240 learners. The university is working closely with the provincial FET colleges by assisting them to improve their curriculum to better enable learners to be admitted for engineering studies. . It was articulated that the university was not responsible for job placement. However, it has an experiential learning division office in the main campus which guides students towards workplace opportunities. . The university has an agreement with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to assist financially needy students. The NSFAS pays for the total cost of tuition including an upfront payment for needy students. There are no reported cases of financial exclusions of needy students at first year level. . The university does not entirely depend on the Matric results to determine the ability of students. It has its own internal evaluation system to recognise potential students. . There are short courses offered in the university to assist part time students who are in full time employment with skills enhancement. A portion of these students are admitted for full time courses upon completion of the short courses. . It was noted that the university requires additional funding so as to improve staff development. This will assist the university in terms of setting a good standard as a newly merged institution. . The financial status of the university is stable though more funds are required to improve the infrastructure capacity and outlook of the institution. . The human factor is the main challenge delaying the progress of the merger. Certain individuals find it challenging to adapt to the new environment of the university which leads to occasional insubordination. . The current enrolment rate of postgraduates is in line with the capacity of the university which is 5% compared to the 7% set up by the department. . The majority of alumni of the university are reportedly performing well at other institutions both nationally and internationally, which testifies to the quality of the university's programmes.
