Speaker, the ACDP wholeheartedly supports the call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation for 18 July to be recognised as an annual international day of humanitarian action in celebration of Madiba's life and legacy.
This day will also serve as an annual celebration of the life of Mr Mandela and as a call to action, for people to recognise their individual ability to make a difference where they are. We will be honouring a humble, yet great man who will forever be known as a champion of nation-building, reconciliation and peacemaking, a man who dreamed of a better life for all and who has spent his life trying to make this dream a reality.
On Mandela Day, we believe that, among other things, old age homes should be visited to give back a smile to the many grandparents who have been abandoned by their families.
Even though Mandela Day may come around only once each year, cultivating the good habit and culture of caring is a positive investment in our society and will help to channel the energy of our young people into doing something constructive in their schools and communities.
The ACDP wholeheartedly supports the call to individuals to give at least 67 minutes of their time in service to their communities in whichever way they choose. We will also continue with our involvement in activities to uplift the poor, needy and vulnerable in our communities and make them feel loved and very special. Thank you. [Applause.]
