The DTI's role is to promote employment and equity through economic growth within a developmental state in line with South Africa's vision. This, in essence, is the primary role and mandate of the DTI. In his briefing to the Committee, the Minister of Trade and Industry outlined the key challenges and constraints facing the DTI. Broadly, these focused on industrial development, trade policy and relations, as well as regional integration. The Minister pointed out that the "Framework for South Africa's Response to the International Economic Crisis", calls for a coordinated response by government and its social partners to minimize the impact of the downturn on the poor. The Committee agreed that the Framework's expanding impact of industrial policy could be a vital link in creating jobs and sustainable livelihoods.
